Is it important to read all books in a series?

Question by hideko: Is it important to read all books in a series?
I don’t necessarily mean a series like Harry Potter. I’m referring to books in a series of romance novels for example. I picked up a book that is #5 in the series, but the stories (according to reviews) don’t seem to connect to previous books in the series. Other than the use of the same last name for characters. What is this about? Can someone explain how these series work?

that kind of series does not need to be read in order.
you might understand a little more about the background or families involved, but you will get all the critical plot, no matter how out of order your reading is.

  2. It would probably be better to read them in order, but it’s not necessary

Yup, you’re right. Some romance series follow a different plot and couple every book. You don’t really need to read the previous ones.

There are also romance series where each book is connected to each other. For example, the heroes are from the same family or work in a business together or something like that.

I tried to read Black Dagger Brotherhood series from book five/six, I didn’t understand what was going on at all. This series follows a different couple in each book but I had to go back to book 1. The plot didn’t make any sense becasue I skipped a couple of books.

So, it depends on the author and the series, I guess.
