Patti Smith to Ethan Hawke: You ‘have the worst f*cking job in the world’

Leave it to Patti Smith to tell you that you “have the worst fucking job in the world” in the most charming way possible.

Smith sat down for an interview with Ethan Hawke as part of the Tribeca Film Festival, and she gave it to him straight in their conversation that covered music, film, success and her favorite TV show, Law & Order.

Smith was referring to the grueling schedule of an actor — 16-hour-days, shooting the same scene over and over, hours in the makeup chair. It’s not really her thing. She tried it out when she was younger, most notably writing and performing in Cowboy Mouth with ex-boyfriend Sam Shepherd as a “swan song’ to their affair, but the reception bored her. “I have that John Barrymore desire to interrupt everything,” Smith joked.  Read more…

52 Disney Animated Movie Locations Mapped Around the World

Looks like it really is a small world, after all.

Artist Eowyn Smith has compiled several of the magical kingdoms from Disney and Pixar flicks and mapped out their locations around the world.

Smith wrote on her DeviantART page that the map features 46 Disney and 16 Pixar movies. If a film was too vague about their location, Smith relied on the original story or myth on which the movies were based.

Take a look and see what stops you’d make on a Disney-themed trip around the world.

How a High School Teacher Is ‘Gamifying’ World News

A new game called Fantasy Geopolitics (think Fantasy Football meets Model United Nations) is radically changing the way high school students in Minnesota are interacting with the news.

In 2009, Eric Nelson, a Social Studies teacher at North Lakes Academy Charter School in Forest Lake, Minn., developed Fantasy Geopolitics after recognizing that his attempts at getting his students to engage with the class weren’t quite hitting the mark.

“When I started teaching, the average ninth grader looked like a zombie in class,” Nelson told Mashable. “One night when I was lesson planning, I took a break and literally checked my Fantasy Football team and I had this realization that I was learning a lot about the NFL — things about football and the NFL I wouldn’t have otherwise learned.” Read more…

Is Dr. Deepak Chopra living on this earth, or a parallel universe where catch phrases alone save the world?

Question by azheelshock: Is Dr. Deepak Chopra living on this earth, or a parallel universe where catch phrases alone save the world?
I know I’m not alone in thinking Deepak Chopra’s ideas are akin to felt pictures of Unicorns.
In skepticism we have two canonical sayings: “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence” and “Keep an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out.” – Michael Shermer

Catch phrases? Yes, but science is evidence. Chopra makes “quantum” claims with no intention to prove them with evidence.

An open mind doesn’t make you an “advanced” thinker. And, no, I wouldn’t let him operate on my brain.

Sadly, it’s neither. He lives in a parallel universe in which catch phrases are meant to save the world yet an intergallactic disturbance has rendered them as impotent as a dead dog metaphor.

Great silences follow. Dogs bark in the distance. It’s a frightening place, yet they keep trying.
