Bonnie Johnson takes the term “non-traditional college student” to a whole new level.

Like many Americans, Johnson had a dream of obtaining a college degree. But unlike so many of the Kennesaw State University graduates crossing the stage this morning, Johnson’s dream wasn’t achieved in a linear, four-year-long fashion.

In fact, realizing her goal took more than three decades. Johnson began pursuing a degree in business administration in 1983. Before she was able to graduate, however, life threw her more than a couple curveballs.

Travel Back 50 Years to 1964 New York World’s Fair

In 1964, the New York World’s Fair opened with radical technologies and dazzling futuristic displays.

Fifty-one million visitors descended on Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, N.Y. over two six-month seasons in 1964 and ’65 to experience innovations like “picturephones,” lunar crawlers and Belgian waffles. The Ford Times called it “a lively and lavish concoction of spectacular entertainment.”

Though a conflict with the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) stripped the fair of an official sanction, the event represented an exciting time in American scientific advancements. On December 31, 2012, I nursed my two-week old son and made a single resolution: Survive the first year of parenthood. And now, just over one year later, I’m proud to say that, perhaps for the first time in my life, I stuck to my new year’s resolution.

This year, I’ve found that my list of resolutions fall into two camps: the usual post-holiday suspects, like vowing to run a faster 5K and eat less junk, and the supermom wish list, like resolving to take my son to the playground despite the cold weather.
