The Optimization Trap: Why Your Checklist is a Panic Attack

I’ve spent way too many years treating my life like a project management board. You know the vibe—perfectly timed morning routines, habit trackers that look like spreadsheets, and that constant, buzzing feeling that if I just find the right app, I’ll finally be “fixed.”

But here’s the thing: that buzzing isn’t productivity. It’s a panic attack in slow motion.

I came across this piece on Medium that put it perfectly:

“Hustle culture thrives on one lie: ‘You are only as valuable as what you produce.'”

Rozanne Day

It’s a lie we tell ourselves to feel in control. We optimize the routine because we’re terrified of the mess. We think if we can just streamline the “process” of being human, we can avoid the parts that actually hurt.

Then I saw this on Substack:

“I was so focused on the mechanics of being productive that I forgot to ask if the ‘productivity’ was actually serving my life.”

Wise Effort

That’s the real trap. We build a high-performance engine but forget to check if the car is even facing the right direction. We’re just driving faster and faster into a wall of burnout.

If you’re tired of the grind, maybe it’s time to stop treating your existence as a problem to be solved. You can read more about why optimization is actually a panic attack and how to actually start weaving a life that doesn’t feel like a chore.
