The Goldmine in the Plumbing Van

I’ve always had a thing for the “unsexy” businesses. The stuff that keeps the world running while everyone else is fighting over SaaS startups and AI prompts.

I came across this clip about HVAC leads and it really clicked for me. Most of these guys are absolute killers at the actual trade, but they’re losing half their business simply because they’re under a sink and can’t answer the phone. It’s wild how much money is just… left on the table.

“Industry data suggests that home service companies miss 30 to 50 percent of inbound calls simply because technicians are on-site and office staff are overwhelmed.”

That’s a massive gap. It’s not even about the “tech” in a fancy sense; it’s about the logistics. If you can solve the “phone problem” for a local plumber or electrician, you’ve basically bought yourself a monopoly in your zip code.

The shift happens when you stop thinking like an employee of your own business and start thinking like an architect. It’s the difference between working for a paycheck and building an asset that actually runs without you having to be the one holding the wrench 24/7.

This is really what I mean by building a life without permission. You don’t need a VC or a fancy degree. You just need to find a boring problem and solve it better than the guy next door.
