The Illusion of the Gap

The Illusion of the Gap

Most of us spend our entire lives running a race toward a finish line that moves every time we get close. We call it “self-improvement,” but often, it’s just a sophisticated form of torture.

“People may set goals and engage in various behaviors to bridge the gap between their actual self (how they perceive themselves currently) and their ideal self (how they ideally want to be).”

The phrase “bridge the gap” is where the trap is set. It assumes that the “Ideal Self” is a real destination—a place you can actually arrive at if you just read enough books, wake up at 5 AM, or optimize your habits.

But here is the truth: the gap doesn’t exist because the destination is an illusion. When you try to “bridge” a gap to a ghost, you aren’t improving; you’re just reinforcing the idea that who you are right now is insufficient. The liberation doesn’t come from closing the gap, but from realizing the gap was a fiction to begin with.
